Montessori is not just a way of teaching. It is a way of understanding children.
Started by Dr Maria Montessori, this method helps children become more independent, curious, and respectful. Whether it is at home or in school, Montessori ideas focus on helping children grow in their own way instead of forcing them to follow a fixed plan.
A Space Made for the Child
A Montessori classroom looks completely different than typical classrooms. The chairs and tables are the right size made just for the children. The learning materials are easy to see and within the reach of the kids . Children can move around freely and choose what they want to work on with no restrictions. This helps them learn to make choices and stay focused.
At home you can follow Montessori principles like giving children opportunities to do things for themselves: Allow them to dress themselves in the morning, or to assist in the kitchen. These small actions contribute a sense of pride as well as a sense of trust.
Adults Help but Do Not Control
At conventional schools, and in the case of children’s activities, the teacher directs what the children should do. At Montessori we respond, pay close attention, and advise/provide assistance when necessary, as described by the child.
Teachers/Parents act as the guides. They see what the child is interested in, and when they are ready for next steps they facilitate the process of supporting them to their newfound potential. They also know when to “back off” and intervene only as necessary so that the child can achieve it independently, and build confidence.
Learning in a Natural Way
In Montessori Schools, children get to learn at their own speed without rushing. Children are usually placed in a mixed age group. Where the older kids help the younger ones and the younger ones learn by looking at the older kids.
Children enjoy and learn through hands-on experiences. They touch things, they explore things, and determine on their own. There is no rush to learn anything in particular. This style of learning happens at home. Parents involve children in daily tasks, like cooking or folding laundry, or assign them help on these tasks. These activities and experiences contribute to their development in an authentic and meaningful way.
More Than a Teaching Method
Something more than methodology Montessori is not about expensive toys or a rigid timetable. It is about a way to think about how we treat children. We believe children are intelligent, capable, and full of ideas.
At The Montessori House, as one of the best montessori schools in Chennai, we follow this belief in every way. From how we set up our classrooms to how we talk to children, our goal is to help them grow in a happy and strong way.
